Alt Na Braigh

The project transforms a historic mid-1800s home in Milltimber, Aberdeen - integrating contemporary living spaces with the mature landscape setting.

Our design reconfigures the existing house and adds a timber-clad extension, ensuring both the new and old elements function to their full potential.

The project creates a living environment that is in harmony with nature.

A clear and efficient plan layout is established: a generous circulation and supportive zone to the north, and an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area to the south. The separation of these zones transforms the living spaces into destinations, rather than mere transitional zones, as was the case in the existing property.

Carefully chosen natural materials create a warm and homely interior. A stepped oak roof structure, rises in height towards the mature landscape. Natural light filters past the timber structure,  balancing the levels of natural light throughout the plan. The lowered section mediates the existing structure, while creating distinct spaces for food preparation and dining. As a result the dining space has its own definition - a room within a room.

The extension results in a light-filled, free-flowing living space that connects intimately with its surroundings. This design enhances the property's functionality while reinforcing it's relationship with the picturesque landscape of Milltimber as it terraces down towards the river Dee.
